Who We Are
Established in 1932 as The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ,Pune it is presumably the oldest veterinary hospital in Pune and is the place to bring your special pets for loving, experienced care by Veterinary Doctors who have been in this field for more than two decades and have accumulated vast experience; during their services with the State government and Private institutions; in the treatment of large and small animals, birds and reptiles in rural, semi-urban and urban areas. These animals include dog breeds such as Huskies, Dobermanns, Rotweillers, chihuahua etc , persian ,siamese cats birds and turtles.
This veterinary Hospital was run by the Animal Husbandry Deoartment of the Govt of Maharashtra till 2002. it is being run by the Society ever since. However the Society underwent a change in its nomenclature in 2019 under a new policy of the Union Government wherein all State Governments were required to establish their own SPCA’s in each district. The Society is now known as Society for the Welfare of Animals, Pune. The veterinary Hospital is named as the Sir Manekji Mehta Veterinary Hospital in the memory of Sir Manekji Mehta one of the founding trustees.
This veterinary facility served as the foundation of modern animal healthcare in Pune and adjoining districts. This institution provided modern veterinary medical care to livestock, working animals and abandoned stray animals, a service, which was non existent in the first quarter of the past century. This Society played a crucial role in advancing veterinary science through research, training, and the development of treatment methods.
